William Cobb (Court Of Owls)

William Cobb follows Strix and is the fifth Court of Owls mini I have painted, and another step closer to having a full 350 Reputation limit crew.

This is my favourite model from the first Court crew box, and was easily the most crisply cast in the box. I found the painting a bit of a struggle with all the costume seams (Knight Models painted their studio version as though it is metal banding, but looking at the source art and colouring it looks more like seams to me from there), coupled with the fact maybe like a lot of hobbyists, sometimes I just find painting harder than at other times.

In the comics, Cobb is revealed as the first Talon encountered when Batman finally learns of the Court of Owls' existence, but also the great-grandfather of Dick Grayson.

I recently had a very brief run-out with the Court sans William Cobb, and from that I am looking forward to using him. He lacks the overall threat of Strix, but what he offers is that he is probably the best option in the crew against higher-Defense characters. Elusive, Martial Artist and Stealth Through the Equipment list) will make him more survivable, while Undercover may get him close at deployment to a prime target be it Objective or enemy model.

To complete the crew I need to paint at least one more mini, preferably two. I need to add another Talon - Brandon O'Malley - as well as the new Leader option (partly because I feel it has better rules in terms of how I want to play the crew, and mainly because I think it is a better sculpted model). That gives me a few weeks to get things finished for the next Titan Games tournament in Lichfield, which I think is a reasonable target.

    Being a bit out of touch with the DC Universe, whilst I am aware of the Court of Owls, I don't really know much about them. However, this one I recognise. A nicely restrained paint job, PC. I must really expand my black painting skills, as your blacks look really good. The Grey highlights really give it some depth.

      I think the blacks came out a little better on a couple of the other court models I did, but I am happy with how the crew is progressing interms of painting. :)

    I really like how you're avoiding the standard paint scheme. This is probably my favourite of the Owls models.

      While I can see the origin of the brown form the comics colouring and the owl motif, the use of heavy black inking on the Batman books makes me think they were intended to have primarily 'black' costumes with gold and silver accents.

      Definitely my favourite Court model so far, closely followed by the new leader. :)

    A friend of yours showed me this blog for inspiration ! And inspired I am! They look fantastic. Can I be really cheeky and ask how you done the black? It's exactly the kind of thing I would love to try ! Great work bud! :)

      Hi Ryan, thanks for the really kind words. :)

      My 'black' is actually a mix I make up, which is not as hard as it sounds, and can be done with a spare bottle - I buy cheap dropper bottles to mix batches of paint into.

      The base colour is 1:1 mix of reaper Nightshade Purple and Vallejo Model colour Dark Grey.

      For shading, is variously use AP Strong Tone or Dark Tone, or my stash of old GW Badab Black wash, or Reaper Nightshade Purple or VMC Black thinned down depending on which part of the model I am painting.

      For highlights i mix a little VMC Medium Sea Grey into the base colour for successive highlights.
