Quarter 4 Painting & Year End Hobby Review 2016

2016 been a pretty good year hobby wise for me. Since changing my focus to low model count skirmish gaming in 2009, it is my best painted minis total within a single year. I finished Quarter 4 with 18 minis (top two images).

I managed to paint 67 models across 10 ranges, even starting some new ranges. I met or exceeded my targets on 5 ranges (but missed my targets for another 3; I unexpectedly started a couple of new ranges this year).

Quarter 1
I am really pleased about the amount of Pulp City minis I painted this year, which took me past 150 painted Pulp City minis in total. I hope to maintain that momentum next year, but time will tell. Pulp City and BMG were my big areas of output, but I stalled on stuff like Tooth & Sword and Warmachine/Hordes in 2016 unfortunately.

I added and assembled some new terrain (most of it was blogged), so that was nice, and I have a bit of a backlog of terrain stuff still to paint and put together for 2017.

On the gaming front I managed 32 skirmish games, so a little over one game every two weeks. I played in several BMG tournaments and won two (1st out of 10 or 11 in one; and 1st out of 6 in another) and came 3rd in another (out of 18 players).

Quarter 2
My painting in 2016
I set a high-end target of 60 minis for the year and thankfully exceeded that. I think I'll be setting the same target for next year since it is do-able (in 3 out of 4 years at any rate).

Quarter 3 2016 Painting Summary

My usual quarterly summary is almost a month late - shows how much I have been preoccupied with not feeling the painting mojo!

The funny thing is that it is my best quarterly output in almost 4 years of monitoring what I paint!

Between July to September I painted 21 minis across 5 ranges, so hopefully living up to the 'eclectic' title, even if only a little. One of those ranges was my first toe-dipping into Knight Models' Marvel range (MUMG). which I hope to add to in the next few months (I am far from a playable team for the game yet). I am especially pleased to have painted a fair few Pulp City models in the quarter, taking me way beyond my original target for the range this year.

I also managed 6 games in the quarter, some in preparation for a tournament in October which I did quite well in...

In all, despite my feeling of painting malaise at times, on reflection it was actually a pretty productive period hobby wise.

Painted in Q3 (+4 from Q3 2016)
Pulp City: 8 minis
BMG: 8 minis
MUMG: 3 minis
Malifaux: 1 mini
Other: 1 mini (Wolsey)

Quarter 2 2016 Painting Summary

Some mixed feelings of where I am at with painting right now. On the whole, I have managed to paint quite a few minis in the last three months. However, unfortunately for a little over two weeks one of our cats has been very ill, and supporting him has meant my wife and I have been pretty tired and I have not been feeling particularly motivated to paint, so less output in June than originally hoped for. The most important thing is making our little cat as comfortable as possible for as long as possible, and hobby stuff will be there in the future.

In all I painted 12 minis in the last quarter, across 5 ranges, adding a couple of new ranges (Malifaux and G.I. Joe). I didn't play many games in the last three months, but have done some game design writing, and continue to work on the ongoing development of Pulp City with the rest of the Pulp Monsters team, so mixed outputs overall.

Painted in Q2 (-1 from Q2 2015)
  • Pulp City: 5 minis
  • BMG: 4 minis
  • Freebooters Fate: 1 mini
  • Malifaux: 1 mini
  • G.I. Joe: 1 mini

Not sure how things will progress over the next few weeks, but I will try and add stuff from time to time.

Quarter 1 2016 Painting Summary

2016 is off to a pretty good start for me hobby wise. I have done some painting, some terrain building (one still to be shown!), and I have also have racked up 11 minis games played so far (across 4 games systems), which is at least half the number of games I managed last year in total!

Painted in Q1 (+0 from Q1 2015)
  • BMG: 11 minis (all were characters, unlike some of the 10 in the same quarter last year!)
  • Pulp City: 4
  • Anima Tactics: 1

The goals I set for the year ahead were to paint 12 minis for each of Pulp City, Anima Tactics and BMG, 4 more Zombies for Zomtober, 5 Hordes/Warmachine minis, 2 Tooth & Sword minis and 1 Freebooter's Fate mini. For Pulp City I want to get as many Minions and Grimm done as possible.

I also plan to get a start on Dropzone Commander (I set the goals for the year before I picked the game up) and some Malifaux minis, plus some other odds and ends. My overall target for the identified totals is 50; if I manage over 60 I will be happy.

So far, of those goals, the BMG is nearly done, and will likley be exceeded if I get motivation to complete two part-done crews. Pulp City *should* be manageable and I would love to exceed that goal, and the hardest to reach motivation wise will probably be Anima Tactics.

Quarter 2 last year saw a little drop off in output on the painting front as I was building a lot of terrain at that time, so i hope to side-step that this time around.
