Mimic (Fantasy Gaming)

A bit of an odd one this, amid this month's Zomtober outputs, and mainly finished because Zomtober has seemingly reignited some painting motivation.

Mimics are tried and true Dungeons & Dragons monsters that have popped up in other franchises such as Japanese console rpgs. They are creatures which inhabit dungeons pretending to be treasure chests etc. in order to pounce on unsuspecting adventurers!

This sculpt is from Reaper Miniatures and is cast in their Bones material. I did a poor job of clean up, and I have to say I really don't like the Bones material at all.

Cheap is great, but in hindsight I would have probably preferred to do this one in white metal, and would likely have cleaned it up better had that been the case.

I have a Fantasy Gaming Project looming (probably using Tooth & Sword minis for the protagonists and many/some of the antagonists), so the Mimic is intended to be part of that. I have already picked up another couple of Mimics from another manufacturer so expect to see something similar in the not too distant future. More details in due course!

Sandblaster (Crimemasters)

Sandblaster is a mini I assembled and undercoated years ago. Her undercoat was black, which I reckon puts it at least as six or seven years ago, maybe more. In other words - long overdue to get out of the dread 'painting queue'!

The mini is produced by Reaper in their Chronoscope range, and to be honest, the detail is somewhat soft. That said, she made for a fairly straightforward paint job, even if a pretty basic one, which was ideal after the barren painting spell of February and March.

I'll be using the mini as Sandblaster, a Super in the ranks of the Crimemasters, a Team I'll use to play-test Supers Unlimited (you can read more about Supers Unlimited in general on the Kitbash Games blog). A crook who never made the big time, Jenna Thomas was part of a gang who stole a sample of sand energised with extra-terrestrial energy. The sand was affected following the appearance of Ion, the Caller and his subsequent battle with The Watch near Groom Lake. The sample was being held and tested at OMNI Labs under government contract. With inside help, the gang secured a flask of the sand for their buyer, but as they tried to escape, an OMNI security guard's energy pistol blast shattered the flask and reacted with the contents, spraying them across Jenna's body. She awoke days later, handcuffed to a hospital bed in an isolation unit. Thinking only of escape, her body turned to a crystalline form and as living sand she slipped her bonds, escaping into the night. Months later, the Villain known as Sandblaster started her Super-crime career.

Targeteer

It has a long while since I last painted a 'supers' mini that wasn't either Pulp City or Batman Miniatures Game. more than a year in fact!

This was done quickly as I had not painted anything and needed to get some momentum back, so the relative simplicity of this Reaper Chronoscope mini was a draw to do that. That to getting started on this I was quickly able to paint a couple of Anima Tactics minis too last week, so it was nice to get back on track. Not amazing painting, but quick and done.

I'm not sure of the Reaper pack name for the model, but I call her Targeteer. I imagine her as being related to a  golden age or silver age hero of the same name, perhaps who hung up their spandex, and she in turn has decided to carry on the family tradition with a quiver full of trick arrows when she had to uncover a mystery relating to the disappearance of the original Targeteer.

I plan to use some Reaper Chnronoscope supers for some play-test games for the Pulp City build your own rules when we get deeper into those, as well as maybe games of Supersystem (4th edition goes to Kickstarter very soon) or Power Legions, the variant of the Song of Blades and Heroes system variant for supers games, which I hear may arrive towards the end of this year.

Lady Panther (Super November 2012 #2)

This is the second mini in the challenge, and Rob and I have agreed to get as many supers minis painted in one month a we can, after the relative success of Zomtober.

So after last week's Harrier (seen on Pulp Citizen here) this week I have painted the Lady Tiger mini from Reaper's Chronoscope range.

I make no bones that the colour scheme is stolen off a certain Marvel-lous cat-themed super; if it works why not?

After last months Zeds got my painting rustiness out of the way, it has been nice getting more diverse pieces painted, and diversity is definitely a key point with this month's challenge.

This mini may never even see gaming - who knows - but it was nice to paint and nice to have it finished. Lady Panther's back-story has her as an Unhuman adventurer-thief with cat-like powers, who keeps making bad decisions, such as throwing in  with the Crimemasters from time to time!

Keep watching here and Pulp Citizen to see how I get on!

Aquamarina

I imagine Aquamarina is some kind of Unhuman mutate empowered with the ability to transform into a form of water. Or maybe she is some kind of water elemental type? Who knows.

This mini is one of a burgeoning number of supers to be found in the Chronoscope range from Reaper, and known by a different name in that range to the one I have chosen. The mini is effectively one of a set of four classical-element themed female supers in the range, and I will get to the others in good time. While it was nice to see supers in the Chronoscope range, I feel that more recent sculpts have been better than a couple of the initial supers minis (with some notable exceptions among those first few).

Obviously anyone who follows my Pulp Citizen blog knows I am a supers nut, so expect to see quite a few in the coming months if I can keep my present motivation for painting. But rest assured other stuff is in the pipeline, so hopefully this blog will live up to its name.

Kabaka K'Wana

I have posted this already on Pulp Citizen, but for anyone not reading that blog I though I'd kick off posting with some minis I have painted and/or photographed in the past year or so. The backdrops vary quite a bit in those older pictures, as I am still trying to get to grips with my miniature photography, so please bear with me.

First up is the mighty giant silver ape Kabaka K'Wana. I have already used him in Pulp City games so far, but hopefully he well also see use in some pulp and Victoriana themed games as well.

Kabaka K'Wana is from Reaper's P-65 range and is a big beast in every sense, and very weighty too. To match in with basing for my other minis, the interior of the base (an 80 mm recessed piece from Fenris Games) was a simple scratch build using sand and plasticard to try and evoke a paved effect; basically I wanted something that would look okay in some forgotten temple or even urban streets.
